CHINESE HERBAL THERAPY
The Chinese system of herbal medicine has been evolving, and continues to evolve, over several thousand years. This system of herbal medicine includes knowledge of the functions and effects of individual herbs and how these individual herbs work together with other herbs in a formula. Also, how an herb or formula affects particular organs or systems of the body or how a formula helps with particular symptoms.
Practitioners of Chinese herbal medicine are trained in a complex system of diagnosis to help determine which class of formulas is appropriate for the condition and which particular formula in that class is right. Each class of formulas has a general function to help balance and bring the body back to a state of health, or homeostasis. Particular formulas fine tune the general function.
For example, with symptoms of a respiratory infection, viral or bacterial, there are classes of formulas for different stages of the illness. The first stage formula focuses on anti-viral herbs to help the infection from invading into the sinus or lungs. One would take these at first sign of a possible cold.
Other respiratory infection herbal formulas might be used for deeper infection with chills and fever; end stage to help clear thick mucus from the sinus or lungs; for cough, and so on. Other formulas are used to strengthen the immune system.
Chinese medicine is amazing for what are generally called Tonic Herb Formulas. Unlike clearing formulas, which are used for a short time, with particular symptoms, tonic herbs can be used indefinitely to help with general function of the body, longevity, anti-aging. These types of formulas are especially good for menopausal symptoms.
